Crowded Closet Thrift Shop

Crowded Closet Thrift Shop is a nonprofit thrift store located at 851 Highway 6 East in Iowa City, Iowa, that has served the community since its founding in 1978 by Mennonite women. The store sells donated men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, housewares, furniture, books, toys, antiques, and collectibles, with all profits supporting Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) world relief and development programs as well as local community relief agencies. Operated by hundreds of volunteers alongside a small staff, Crowded Closet has relocated three times throughout its history and now occupies the former Kmart building. The store has become a valued community institution, receiving recognition from the City of Iowa City for supporting sustainable lifestyles and is frequently recognized by residents as a favorite shopping destination for antiques and vintage items.
