The Bargain Box

The Bargain Box is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit thrift shop located at 546 William Hilton Parkway in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Established in 1965 by three ladies from First Presbyterian Church as an affordable shopping option for working residents, the organization was incorporated as a standalone nonprofit in 1970 when it began generating sufficient revenues to support local social agencies and charities. The store offers gently used, donated merchandise including clothing, furniture, home goods, toys, bicycles, sporting goods, electronics, books, artwork, and antiques at bargain prices. Over the decades, The Bargain Box has become an island institution, returning more than $14 million to the community through grants to Beaufort County nonprofits, with over 86% of proceeds supporting local charities. The store maintains a small paid staff while relying on volunteer trustees to fulfill its mission of providing affordable goods while strengthening the community.
